MOTEL 6 - EMORIA, KS

I'll be back.

I had hoped to make it to Wichita tonight but the rig I'm driving is governed a little too slow for that so I thought I would be cheap and stay at the Budget Host here in Emporia. The Budget Host is just out of town with no food around so I stopped and grabbed a sandwich a few miles back.
But when I got to the Budget Host it was full so to the Motel 6 is was. Had I known the '6 had dropped their price to $29, this would have been my first choice … I just checked and the last times I have stayed here the price was $39.
And based on tonight's stay, this is a $29 motel.
The room is clean, quiet and the water was hot. It is everything I want for the night and I am not paying for anything I don't need.
The carpet in the halls are well stained and either aren't being cleaned well or it has been years since it has been replaced.
There is plenty of dedicated big rig parking and now three food choices nearby. Bruffs is why I like to stay at either the M6 or the GH next door. There is also a Burger King and another place that is open again, at least the 3rd name in the last 10 years. Not sure if the restaurant at the GH is still open or not. And if you want to drive, there are another dozen places on the other side of the freeway to eat.

TUCUMICARI INN - TUCUMICARI, NM

First impressions are hard to shake

I've stayed at this location a few times before and have reviewed it before in Feb, 2011.
But tonight when I went to unlock the door with the old fashioned key, the door pushed open, it wasn't latched. And the first light I turned on looked like the light from a 15 watt bulb. The door did close and lock, it just took a really good slam. By then I had an uneasy feeling that I just couldn't shake.
HOWEVER, everything was clean, quiet and the water was hot … right away.
The sink, toilet and tub were all fairly new and clean, no dirt, no chips, no water stains.
The sheets are old and maybe not even the right size for this bed, but they were clean.
Over the next week I have stayed at $100 a night motels that have had water stains on the tub, paint 'bumps' in the sink, 15 watt lights and a tub that wouldn't drain. Those things all make this place look pretty good.
The Tucumcari Inn also has food next door something the east end motels no longer have now that Denny's moved to the Flying J. Big rig parking is where you find it, lots of open space.
The sign out front says 'American Owned,' the sign next door says 'Genuine American Owned' and is $34. The Tucumcari Inn has dropped its price from $26 in 2006, to $25 in 2010 and now $24 in 2013.
This is one of the few towns where the old motels haven't been dozed to drive up the prices for the major chains. The number of motels is going down and most prices are going up, but there is still one motel for under $20, five more for less than $30 plus another 10 old motels that are not posting prices.
Sorry, no photos from any of the four motels from this trip. Someday when I have a smaller rig, I am going to stop and take pictures of the dozen old motels in this town.

ROCKIN Y' - TUCUMCARI

(I have reviewed this place once before in Feb, 2011)
Tonight I got here a few minutes before closing, the place still had a few customers but I was the last one in the door.
It was late and I just wanted something simple and quick. A patty melt with a side salad did the trick.
Good food, salad was still fresh (being the last customer). Service was good.
(Just hope they do not move the place up to the old Denny's where they would have more motel traffic) It's places like this and the 20 old motels that make this town worth pulling off the interstate for (I couldn't even tell you what is at the middle Tucumcari exit, I always get off and go through town and back on to the interstate on the other end)

COMFORT INN -

I did not want to be here, I usually can make it to Phoenix but not today.
The place is very nice and with some corporate pricing it makes the price 'acceptable.' I really was not able to find anything anywhere else for a better price between Flagstaff and Phoenix.
The only issue I could find that was not up to snuff was that one of the end doors had the security latch broken off. Other than that the motel was clean, quiet and had hot water :, everything I need.
The motel does have two areas of dedicated big rig parking plus parking on the street. There is also a Days Inn at this exit but it does not have any big rig parking.
Denny's is the only sit down restaurant within a few blocks (or more). The A&W / KFC next door is closed, Burger King, DQ, Toco Bell and Subway are still open. Plus a couple of non-chain fast food places.

DENNY'S
It is the only sit down place at this exit … so I'm here.
Tonight's meal for me was their Philly omelet. Food was good service was good, and that's all I ask for from a Denny's.
