USED IH REFER FROM LOU

Friday - 6/3/11

First I have a short trip from our lot to the customer, weather is good until after I drop and then it starts to pour.

Not sure if I'm losing it or what, last one of these trips I thought I was going to Columbus, OH and it was going to Cincinnati. This one I thought was going to Lexington and it's going to Louisville. So both times I looked at the wrong motels.

Early start this time than last, and don't need to go through Milwaukee so I should make it further … but this one is governed at a little less so I only get about an hour further. No problems at fuel stops or in Chicago, I take the usual route.

I remember one young blond in a convertible that cut in front of me in the turn lane at the last minute and waved thank you (after I'd been in the slow lane for two miles). I'm guessing she's done/gotten away with that a few times.

I still have time to run when I get to Lebanon so I push past Indy. First exit south of I-70 that has motels I stop at. The motel clerk gives me a discount card for the Texas Roadhouse but they have a wait so I go to Bob Evans instead.

I put myself in a situation where I didn't have much choice of traveling any further so at this exit the Super 8 looked like my best choice price wise. I had a coupon but it was a weekend and they admitted that their regular price was actually better than the coupon or corporate rates. Person at the front desk was pleasant and helpful, but the first room had not been cleaned and the key wouldn't work on the second room. As I said, I didn't much choice as to where to stay, so I took a 'smoking room' and it was ... a smoky room. I don't use any of the 'extras' in a room anyway, but this room didn't have any. Just a TV (which I haven't turned on for months), WiFi was free and worked.

Saturday - 6/4/11

Rolling … I can do the swap anytime, they've told me where to find and leave the keys.

At my last fuel stop today there are people in the middle of the road if I turn right to Love's but not if turn left to the TA. I go right and see that it is not the cops, but the fire dept taking donations.

There isn't a good way into (or out of) this drop. I take the shortest route which gets me off the freeway about 10 miles before the drop. At one point I thought I'd lost the street was to be on. A two lane highway, narrow roads, typical southeastern road.

I find the drop on my first try. Do see a city bus a couple of blocks away, good to know if I'm ever back. Someone is at the customer, just leaving but I'm able to get a signature and be rolling again in a little over 15 minutes.

I know I can't make it home from here, but I'd like to have some of my Sunday … a noon birthday party is my goal.

Yesterday I heard there is an airshow in Rockford so if I can make it past Chicago tonight I also need to be past Rockford., otherwise it's Gary IN and eight hours driving on Sunday. The water has dropped a lot in the few days since I was through here, can actually see fields where lakes once were.

I can see the storms when I get closer to Chicago and for some reason I decide to go through downtown … bad choice, that is only a good idea between 2 and 7 AM Sunday morning :

I come in I-65 to I-90, more tolls this way also. IN has self service tolls, I put in a couple of bucks an find $4.00+ in change in the machine … I think I've hit the jackpot … until a few hours later when I can't find / remember where I spent that $5. ???

And then the rains came, it may have been a good thing to have gone through downtown even as slow as it was. The southwest 'burbs got dumped on, tornado warnings. By the time I'm through town they have closed the express lanes because of standing water so I just missed it. I think I spent most of an hour in stop and go …

I've got time to make it to Janesville, I know there's a Motel 6 and an Econo Lodge … but a reason I no longer remember I stop at the Microtel. Great corp pricing. (For those interested, the Econo Lodge is just a couple of blocks from Hooters)

"Finally"
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2011 NEW

I have tried to get into a Texas Roadhouse in a couple of different states, but I have limited hours 'off' and I'm not going to spend that waiting in lines.
But tonight when I called they said there was no waiting so I tried again. There was a couple of minutes wait, but well worth it.
The host asked if I had ever been to one before and the waitress asked again ... 'No' ... I haven't. As I'm looking at my menu, someone comes past and says "I hear you haven't been here before, we'd like you to try this rack of ribs on us." HUH???
I'm already in here, you don't need to convince me but 'OK.' MMmmmm they were good, and a meal for me. But I couldn't really just say 'thank you' and walk out, so I ordered the smallest thing I could find, a pulled pork sandwich. Good ... and the bread ... good.
I still can't afford to wait, but this place has convinced me ... I can call ahead and get it to go ... :)

"I forget how nice these places are ..."
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2011 - NEW

Not sure why, but when I'm looking for a place for the night I tend to forget about the Microtel chain. I've stayed at a few and so far they seem to be a step above the Red Roof (two above the Motel 6's) and above the Super 8's and Days Inn but without the extra's. Extra's that I don't use.
Front desk was helpful at checkin and again in finding me when someone told them that I'd left my lights on :( That saved me a few dollars.
I'll be back and need to remember to look for this chain. Right next door to food and fast food, stores.

Sunday - 6/5/11

Nothing much new in WI … Sunday traffic, my speed is governed at 63 so I'm safe, no chance of speeding. This truck is easy on the fuel so I just need to leave it full so my last and only stop is Baldwin … I'll have enough time to stop home before going to the birthday party.

Off next week, no trips … someone is getting married …
